Back to Way Back Yonder
The birds were chirping and squirrels were busy scurrying about as two angelic creatures packed lumps of soil into a mound underneath an old oak tree in the eastern part of the garden. They were majestic in appearance. Each had the face of a man intertwined with the features of a beautiful woman. There was a small pair of wings attached to the back of their shoulders and their blonde hair was long and flowing though one of them had slightly darker hair than the other. They wore no clothes, but their skin was shaped in a manner to give no indication they were naked, and they lacked genitals to identify the nature of their sex.
Each worked with a quickness that even their fellow angels found incredible. When finished they stood back and surveyed their work. The angel named Gabriel looked at the angel named Uriel and silently raised a disapproving eyebrow. At first Uriel seemed confused but then realized he had forgotten to crush a clod at the end of the mound. Without saying a word he broke it apart and then glanced back at Gabriel who nodded his head in approval. Uriel smiled a broad grin at his fellow worker and then both bent on one knee and bowed their heads in submission to the Lord above.
A great stillness settled upon the land as the Lord Almighty started to speak. All creatures, great and small, took note of the rich baritone voice as He spoke from his throne in the heavens. Every animal, from the largest mammal to the smallest insect, understood in their own way, what the Creator of heaven and earth had to say.
“Come let us make man in our image, according to our likeness,” boomed the Voice of all voices.
Immediately, the sky above Gabriel and Uriel filled with hundreds of angels darting back and forth in heavenly celebration. The two angels stood and joined in the festivity. Such joy had not been matched since creation’s beginning.

All the angels swayed back and forth in unison as they anticipated more words from the God they adored. Yes, all the earth and every moving animal let us give to him.” With a shout of joy the angels broke into song again.

As Gabriel and Uriel turned their concentration back to the mound of dirt the angels flew off to make preparations for the creation of man. The two angels’ attention was diverted when Lucifer swooped down from the sky calling their names. As his feet touched the ground Gabriel could no longer hide his excitement, “Luce it’s a glorious day, indeed, isn’t it?”
Lucifer looked perplexed. He had just come from the Triangulum Galaxy, where he had been investigating a new species the Lord had created, and was unaware that the creation process on Earth had proceeded as far as it had.
“So, what’s all the excitement?”
Uriel looked at him long and hard and then said, “Don’t your remember? The Lord told us all about this at the last gathering.”
Lucifer shrugged his shoulders and replied with a smirk, “I must have missed it. You know, you miss one staff meeting and you’re out of the loop.”
Gabriel gave a long sigh and shook his head. How could an angel, especially one as smart and talented as Lucifer, act so nonchalant about something so important? He pointed his finger at him and sternly said, “You really need to do better, Luce. This is a really big deal and you missed the meeting about it!”
Uriel could no longer hide his excitement and blurted out, “The Lord will soon create man!! That’s what it’s all about, Luce!”
“And He’s going to give this whole world to him. Everything living will belong to the man,” added Gabriel.
Lucifer started chuckling and slapped Gabriel on the back. “Oh, yeah, I heard about that. You know, I’m a step ahead of you guys. I figured He was going to do something like this, so naturally I volunteered.”
His fellow angels were astounded. Lucifer was a good angel, but they had never known him to go out of his way to volunteer for anything. In fact, he was usually conveniently far away, doing something else, when there was any hard work to be done. In fact, they had their suspicions this was the real reason he had been away in the Triangulum Galaxy instead helping them prepare for man. “You? Volunteered? For what?” a skeptical Gabriel cracked.
With pride Lucifer poked his chest out and declared, “Well, it’s quite obvious this is an important creation so I offered my humble services.”
Uriel couldn’t help himself and started laughing. “What do you have to offer?”
“Myself.”
The two angels looked at each other as they tried to read each other’s thoughts as whether to take Lucifer seriously or laugh at the ridiculous thought of him offering anything, much less himself. Gabriel concluded he had better take the serious route and so asked, “Luce, what are you talking about?”
Lucifer, oblivious to the skeptical tone of his fellow angels, started to reveal what he had been thinking for a long time. “Well, I figured He would want to create the best there is, so I offered a piece of me that He could use as a starting block to make the man. It would only need to be a small piece but think of the fantastic results.”
Uriel was flabbergasted. “You offered what?!?”
Rolling his eyes at his friend’s lack of understanding of the obvious, he explained, “A piece of me. He can take a little itty-bitty piece and use it to form the man. This way His creature could be beautiful. He would be majestic. And of course, it would be far more intelligent than anything else He’s ever created. Just like me.”
Gabriel had to bite his lower lip to keep from bursting out with laughter. He knew his fellow angel was an egotistical maniac but he never would have imagined he would have been bold enough to approach the Lord Almighty with such a self-serving offer. Finally, he snickered and said, “Just like you, huh? Would that include a gigantic ego?”
Seeing that their friend was starting to resent their lack of support in something he felt strong about, Uriel put his hand on Lucifer’s shoulder and with as much sincerity as he could muster under the circumstances he asked, “What did He say to your generous offer?”
Lucifer shrugged his shoulders and gave a deep sigh of disappointment. “Well, I never did hear directly back from Him. Michael said He was considering it but not to get my hopes up. I don’t know why he wouldn’t agree to it. It’s a great idea. I just wanted to help. You know me, give—give—give, and never take.”
Gabriel wanted to say “Oh, my God!” but thought better of it. But no matter how much he liked Lucifer, and he did, he wasn’t going to let him get away with trying to make a name for himself at the expense of God’s glory. So, he slyly said, “Yeah, right. Well, Luce, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Michael’s right. He’s not going to take you up on your generous offer.” He could tell Lucifer was genuinely surprised at this. It just showed wonders never cease.
“Oh, really? Then what did He find that was better than me?” asked Lucifer in a smirking tone.
Seeing that Uriel was going to be in on his little joke, Gabriel smiled and replied, “It’s right over here.”
Lucifer was almost jumping with excitement at the prospect of seeing something more awesome than himself. He was confident that only someone as great as he could truly appreciate the magnitude and the magnificence of something that was even more glorious. “It’s here?? Where?”
Leading him over to the mound of dirt Uriel smiled and said, “Right over there.”
Looking right and then left Lucifer blurted out in frustration, “Where? I know it’s got to be spectacular! Isn’t this exciting?”
“There it is,” Gabriel said pointing to the mound.
Still not seeing what he thought would be an impressive sight, as he wasn’t sure what could possibly be better than him, he cried, “Where? I don’t see anything!”
Milking the moment for everything he could, Uriel slapped Lucifer on the back and declared, “It’s that mound of clay!”
To say Lucifer was stunned would be the understatement of the ages. His mouth dropped opened and he stood there staring at the pile of dirt as if the existence of everything known was coming to an end. Finally, Uriel reached over and gently pushed his lower jaw up to close his mouth. “You might swallow a bug,” he mumbled.
“You’ve got to be kidding!!” Lucifer eventually was able to say.
“No, that’s it,” smiled Uriel as the rejected angel fought hard to control his emotions. It was all he could do to keep from screaming at the top of his voice at the injustice done to him. Not only had his offer been rejected by God but the Almighty had chosen dirt—simple dirt. He felt this was the greatest insult he had ever had to endure—no; it was the greatest insult in the history of everything. Muttering more to himself than to anyone else he said, “I don’t believe it! A pile of dirt?”
As for Gabriel, he thought his self-centered friend had received exactly what he needed—a good dose of humility. He couldn’t help it and had to smirk, “Yep. He found something far superior to you.”
Uriel was a little more sympathetic and tried to say something that would smooth over what he was sure was a devastating blow to his friend’s pride. “What better way than to make man part of this world? I think it was brilliant on His part.”
Gabriel felt he was on a roll and had to poke one more time at his fellow angel. “Absolutely brilliant! Don’t you agree Luce?”
Lucifer cut his eyes toward Gabriel and coldly muttered, “He turned me down for a pile of dirt?!?”
Gabriel was not about to let up. “I’m afraid so, buddy. But don’t take it too personal. Maybe He can still use you. He may need to make a few more bugs. You want to give a little itty-bitty piece of yourself for that?”
This was too much for Uriel. He had to join in the ribbing. “Yeah, or one of those funny looking creatures that swings from tree to tree. I bet a part of you would look majestic hanging from a limb.”
“Absolutely beautiful!” chimed in Gabriel.
Lucifer looked at his two friends with a face as hard as steel. If he had smiled it would have cracked and broken into a thousand pieces. As cold as he could he said, “Oh, you two are way too funny! Ha! Ha!”
This was enough for the angel Gabriel. He knew there was more work needed to be done to finish the garden for the coming man. “Okay, well, enough of this. I want to show you my plans for the rest of the garden.” Uriel was finished too and said, “Good. And I want to tell you some ideas I have.”
The two angels started ascending as they wanted to glide to another part of the garden. Gabriel looked back and shouted, “You coming, Luce?” Without looking up he yelled back, “No, Gabe, you and Uri go on. I’ll join you later. I want to examine God’s handiwork a little closer.” He was still transfixed by the mound of dirt and was still deep in thought at what had happened. Uriel stopped in midair, turned and said, “All right, but don’t be too long. We’ve got a lot to do and I don’t want to have to come looking for you.” With that he flew off to catch up with Gabriel.
Ignoring his fellow angel Lucifer bent over to scrutinize the dirt that would be used to create man. He picked up a small handful and brought it to his nose to sniff it to see if it held any special properties. Then he tasted a little bit and rubbed his tongue along the inside of his cheek. Not finding anything special he spit it out and sneered, “It’s just dirt!!” Raising his head toward the heavens he yelled, “You chose dirt over me?”
Throwing the dirt back onto the pile he hung his head and cried, “I could see using diamonds, gold or even star dust, but plain old regular dirt?!? How can this be?” With disgust he turned and walked slowly away from the mound as the wind started to gently swirl.
--A Pile Of Dirt
Lucifer
♫ I’m confused, my thoughts are not clear.
Please tell me, what has happened here.
I’ve offered a part of myself to You,
A noble gesture and You still refuse.
You throw me away for a mound of clay,
A pile of dirt.
A pile of dirt.
You could’ve taken a teeny tiny bit of me,
And made it majestic for all to see.
Don’t You know how much it hurts?
To be rejected for a pile of dirt.
A pile of dirt!
I’m not seeing your point of view.
Am I worth so little to You?
You pretend to listen but do You care?
And all I wanted was a chance to share.
You’ve shattered my trust for a heap of dust.
A pile of dirt.
A pile of dirt.
You could’ve taken a teeny tiny bit of me,
And made it marvelous for all to see.
Don’t You know how much it hurts?
To be rejected for a pile of dirt.
A pile of dirt!
How will it keep from getting dirty?
How will it ever be found worthy,
Of a place in God’s universe?
I can’t think of anything worse.
How could it be? You must have known,
You know I’m right, You’ve done me wrong.
You’ve had an eternity to think it through,
And this is the best that You can do?
A pile of dirt.
Yes, You could’ve taken a teeny tiny bit of me,
And made it fantastic for all to see.
Don’t You know how much it hurts?
To be rejected for a pile of dirt.
A pile of dirt!
A pile of dirt. ♫
With a snort of disgust Lucifer moved further away as the wind increased and the mound of dirt became a swirling vortex. Gabriel and Uriel returned and descended to watch their Creator in action. The finger of God moved inside the whirlpool and before long the shape of a male human body became visible. Angels appeared hovering in the sky above and all watched in awe at the workings of the Lord. That is, all except Lucifer. He watched, but not in awe.
When God had finished the wind subsided and there lying where the mound of dirt used to be was a naked man. He was fully formed, and though not breathing, his skin held the rosy complexion of a newborn baby. A roar of approval spread through all who were observing, that is, all but one.
“He’s beautiful. The Lord does wonderful work!” declared Gabriel as he moved closer to observe God’s handiwork. Uriel agreed and said, “A marvelous creation.” Off to the side Lucifer spat some more dirt out of his mouth and muttered, “A pile of dirt.”
Gabriel heard Lucifer say something and when he looked and saw him standing off to the side by himself yelled, “Hey, Luce, come here. You’ve got to see this!” Reluctantly and with a shrug he joined his two friends. Cocking his head from one side to the other as he examined the newly created man he finally declared, “He looks dirty.”
“Oh, get over it already,” Uriel snarled as his patience with Lucifer was starting to run thin. “It’s a beautiful creature!”
Lucifer took a step closer and twitched his nose at what he saw. “He doesn’t have any fur,” he said as he shook his head.
“Well, neither do you and you think you’re beautiful,” declared Gabriel. Lucifer ignored him, shuddered and said, “He’s just lying there naked.”
“Well, so are you,” asserted Uriel as he felt anger building over Lucifer’s insolence. He could see his friend was walking a thin line and was very close to blasphemy.
Cocking his head to the side again Lucifer offered, “Yeah, but I don’t have all that extra stuff that’s going be dangling down when he walks.”
Gabriel could feel the wrath building in Uriel, so he tried to defuse the situation and remarked, “Oh, Luce, you’re letting your pride ruin your whole day. Watch yourself cause pride comes before a fall.”
For the first time since finding out his offer had been rejected by God, Lucifer let out a laugh. “Oh, that’s brilliant, Gabe. Wow! Real words of wisdom. I’m sure centuries from now everybody will still remember that one.”
“Well, you’re the only one not happy over what’s happened here,” declared Gabriel as he too started to feel angry at Lucifer’s apathetic attitude. Lucifer let go of a big sigh and stated, “I’m sorry, guys, but I just don’t see it. Dirt is dirt. What else is it good for?”
Uriel had heard enough and was ready to pounce when the wind started swirling again. Quickly the three angels moved to the side and Uriel, struck once again with admiration, whispered, “Watch as the miracle continues.”
After twirling above the man’s head for a few moments the wind swung down and entered his nostrils. With a gasp he started breathing but continued lying on the ground with his eyes closed as his lungs inhaled and exhaled for the first time. Gabriel, trying to keep his emotions from exploding, exclaimed, “Look! The Lord has breathed the breath of life into him!”
It was not long before the man opened his eyes. His eyes darted back and forth as he took in his surroundings and finally settled on the tree hanging overhead. He stretched his muscles and then sat up to get a better look at what was around him. With the quickness and agility of youth he jumped to his feet and started walking around the oak tree.
Uriel looked at Gabriel and said, “He can’t see us.” Gabriel nodded his head and added, “He can if we reveal ourselves to him. But I enjoy watching him from a distance. What do you think Luce?”
Lucifer had quickly lost interest and was observing a bug crawling on a low hanging limb. “Huh? Oh, what can I say? Dirt is dirt.”
Suddenly, God’s voice rang out for all to hear, “From the dust you were formed. You will be called Adam.”
Lifting his arms skyward the man spoke his first word, “Father.” All could feel the smile in the Lord’s voice as he continued, “I have given everything on this earth to be in subjection to you.”
Humbling himself Adam fell to one knee and bowed his head in worship. “Thank you, Father.” The Lord continued, “Here, you may partake of all vegetation bearing seed which is on the surface of the earth. I have given it all to you to serve as food. But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Uriel glanced at Gabriel and declared, “That’s my cue.” He quickly approached Adam and revealed himself as a man with a slight glow around his head. “Hello, Adam.” The man turned to look at the angel. He smiled and said, “Hello.” Uriel laid a gentle hand on Adam’s shoulder and explained, “My name is Uriel. I’m one of God’s messengers. Let me show you the rest of the garden He has made just for you.”
The two walked off smiling and talking as they explored the rest of the Garden of Eden. All the angels in the sky were ecstatic with joy once again and started darting back and forth in celebration. Gabriel joined them as Lucifer hunched over and started looking for dirt clods to throw against the side of the tree.

As Gabriel and the angels flew off into the sky Lucifer looked up to see them disappearing from sight. Biting his lower lip to control his anger and disappointment he gave the tree a swift kick with his foot. The impact of the blow almost uprooted the tree and it leaned over barely being able to remain upright. Spreading his wings, Lucifer took flight and said to anyone who could hear, “Humph…dirt!!”
