Anti-Aircraft Battery Somes Island

This was one of six heavy anti aircraft batteries built in Wellington. It was constructed in 1942 and decommissioned in 1944. It was built to the Type-C design with four emplacements and one command post. The emplacements still exist, but one has been partially demolished. Somes Island is publicly accessible, but it pays to be careful of the sea gulls during nesting season as they frequently nest around the battery.
