Nelson Battery

In 1942 two 5-inch US Naval guns were initially allocated to Nelson. After the guns arrived in NZ, they were redirected to Westport and Greymouth. Instead two 6-inch guns were diverted from Tomahawk (Dunedin) and Bluff. Construction began in April 1942 and completed in September 1942. Then one of the guns wase diverted to Noumea, with the other one being mounted in December 1942.

The battery went into Care and Maintenance in October 1943 and the gun was removed in December 1945.
