Akaroa Battery (Wainui Battery)

In 1941 plans were made to emplace two 6-inch guns and a minefield to secure Akaroa harbour. After the entry of Japan into the war two field guns were sent to temporarily cover the harbour until the fixed fortifications could be constructed. Construction began in September 1942 and both guns were mounted in January 1943.

The battery went into Care and Maintenance in September 1943 and the guns were removed in February 1944.
