Fort Opau

Fort Opau was the last of the 6-inch forts to be built in Wellington. Started in 1941, Fort Opau was built to cover the dead water that the 9.2 inch battery at wrights hill couldn't target. It was sited at the top of a cliff about 600 feet high. Two emplacements were built, each housing one 6-inch gun. Provision for personnel accommodation (and associated facilities) were constructed in a valley behind the battery. Once completed, the fort was operational until June 1944 when the guns were removed.

The fort is publicly accessible outside of lambing season (access is over farm land). In more recent times the gun emplacements have been fenced off for health and safety reasons.
