Motuihe Island

The Island was taken by the Navy as a training establishment in 1940. Two guns were emplaced in 1942, but under Navy control rather than the Army - although the Army did provide key personnel. The battery covered the dead water to the Motutapu guns, one was sited at the cemetery on the north eastern cliffs near the flagpole the other was on the beach to the east. The guns were removed in 1943. The Island is now a reserve and is accessible to the public.
