Ocean Beach Battery (Central Battery)

The Ocean Beach Battery was built in 1886 and was the only South Island example of the standard design created by Major Tudor Boddam (the others were at Fort Kelburn, Fort Bastion and Fort Takapuna). The name of the fort was later changed to Central Battery. The fort was abandoned in the 1920s, but remained in Army ownership. The fort survived until 1958 when it was demolished. The site is presently covered by housing.
