Waiheke Island Battery (Stony Batter)

A series of historic photos of Stony Batter can be found online here: http://www.fortstonybatter.org/index.html

One of two 9.2 inch gun batteries built in Auckland, the one at Waiheke Island was known as site A2. Construction started in late 1942 for three gun pits and associated tunnels and other underground facilities. As with Wrights Hill and Whangaparaoa, only two guns were delivered to the site. In late 1946 work stopped and only one of the guns had been mounted. The second gun was mounted in 1948, but neither gun was proof fired until 1951. The battery was shut down in 1953.

The site is a reserve and is publicly accessible. The tunnels themselves are managed by a trust on behalf of the Department of Conservation and are only open at certain times.
