Anti-Aircraft Battery Johnsonville

This was one of six heavy anti aircraft batteries built in Wellington. It was constructed in 1942 and decommissioned in 1944. It was built to the Type-C design with four emplacements, but no command post was built. Of the four emplacements, only the southern two were fully completed with shelters etc, one of the others was partially completed and the fourth only had the base finished. In 1949 the land was gazetted for use for broadcasting purposes.

In 1959 construction started on a Reservoir next to the battery. Spoil from the excavations for the reservoir were placed over the two southern gun emplacements and compacted firm. The other two gun emplacements lasted on site until 1971 when the land was developed for a housing development - it is unclear if they were buried or demolished.

It's possible that one of the southern gun emplacements remains buried on site.Â
