Life in Ukraine is like life in some abandoned, lawless enclave on the edge of civilization, where all its inhabitants and governing bodies are involved in a certain common current, which is called "movement" here. This current exists as a conspiracy of affiliation with something undefined, incomprehensible, but good in general, to which one must be devoted and loyal. Affiliation and loyalty to this something give a sense of security and community with others who are also involved. This affiliation with the beautiful and incomprehensible gives each of the participants a feeling of happiness and unity. It is not possible to find out what this is called, how it can be formulated in formal terms. No one knows what it is called, and everyone formulates it in their own way. Orwell calls it the dissolution of individuality into the crowd. 

On the evening of December 22, 2012, I entered the "Varus" supermarket located at 2a Hlinky Street in Dnipro, Ukraine. After choosing my groceries, I approached the checkout and saw that there were two cashiers working. One had a queue of approximately five people, while the other had no one waiting, but the cashier, Lyudmila Tsirulnikova, was talking to a man around 35 years old who was loudly telling her about a very successful purchase of an apartment. He claimed to be an honest and decent person who could be trusted and also lucky, supposedly having bought the apartment from someone who was leaving the country for permanent residence. The cashier actively participated in the performance by asking leading questions. They discussed the price, condition of the apartment, problems associated with document registration, and so on. The man smiled warmly, referred to himself as "we", and emphasized how "they" were reliable and honest buyers of apartments. Meanwhile, he spoke half-turned to me and for some reason kept looking at me, as if trying to draw my attention to him, how "they" were good and how "they" could be trusted. At the same time, he did not move away from the aisle, blocking it so that I would listen to the entire "introductory" conversation. 

Поняв, что происходит продолжение оперы «Азбука Морзе», я стал откровенно смеяться в лицо «мы-они». Увидев, что я насмехаюсь над ним, мужчина пробормотал что-то невнятное и ушёл.

Привлекли моё внимание две вещи. 23:54... скажем, не совсем удачное время для разговора с кассиром по двум причинам: во-первых, кассиру нужно сдавать кассу, а во-вторых – … поздно, просто поздно для праздных разговоров.

Организовали эту постановку охранники супермаркета «Варус». И это была не первая, и даже не сто первая постановка. Насколько я понимаю, основная деятельность организаций, которые занимаются охраной торговых центров, выходит далеко за пределы их объявленных функций, а именно – охраны имущества, принадлежащего собственнику, от злонамеренной порчи или кражи.

Незадолго до этого спектакля, двумя месяцами ранее, я ездил в Киев, в посольство США и поняв, что государство Украина обманывает меня и скрывает от меня информацию о моих правах, я уничтожил мой украинский паспорт: сначала разорвал его в клочья, а затем и сжёг. Вначале, дважды, я обращался в Жовтневый РО – там есть локальное отделение миграционной службы, но там паспорт у меня принять отказались и мне остался только один путь – самостоятельно уничтожить паспорт, сделав соответствующее заявление..
