CHOOSING PARTS & BUILDING YOU OWN CABLE
Below are NAME BRAND PARTS made by the original manufacture of the type of parts. Yes there are cheaper parts but you get what you pay for. No name parts have the most risk. Given how important these parts are to the basic EVERYDAY reliability of the DCC system, why skimp on price given how little overall these parts cost.
To that end one should use the RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB in making sure one does a quality job of making cables. The tools are found here:

Description: Right Angle Modular Jack, PCB mount 6P6C, Gold Plated contact pins
DCC brand compatibility: This Jack is used on all NCE throttles and cab panels. Have not verified but I also think the Tony's Train Exchange (TTX) panels may also be the same part given the historic manufacture relationship with NCE.
