Programming QSI Decoders

There are two known problems with QSI decoders.

QSI Decoders have a unique and cool feature who's unfortunate side effect is making QSI decoder programming in both "Programming On the Main" AKA "POM" Mode (NMRA Ops Mode) and "Programming Track" mode (NMRA Service Mode) problematic. This problem happens with or without using Decoder Pro.

The QSI unique feature is "Verbal Acknowledgement". This cool feature gives you somewhat the same programming confidence when "Programming on the Main" (POM) mode that you would normally get when you read the CV value from the decoder using "Programming Track" mode.

When "Verbal Feedback" is enabled and you are using:

1) "Programming On the Main" (POM) mode, the decoder will announcing the first CV value over the built in speaker.

2) "Programming Track" mode, the decoder will NOT announce anything since you can read the CV value directly using the programming track.

1a) THE PROBLEM

When "Verbal Acknowledgment" feature is turned on, unfortunately it will interfere with the ANY TYPE of programming of the decoder. Specifically if you send multiple CV values to quickly, it will only accept the first CV change and ignore the others that follow. You experience frustration in that the decoder does not work properly when you know on your behalf you did all the steps correctly.

Stated another way:

1) When Programming On the Main (POM) and the QSI decoder is busy "talking" about the first CV it got, it is not listening for the other CV values until it is done talking.

2) When in Programming Track mode even thought the decoder does NOT talk, the feature appears to be still active giving you unreliable programming results.

1b) QSI's POSITION

QSI is fully aware of this problem and states in the manual for you to wait until the speaking stops before programming another CV.

Unfortunately for NCE DCC system and Decoder Pro, this is not possible. Both of these system will attempt to write multiple CVs when using certain programming command options are used.

1c) PERMANENT SOLUTION

Disable Verbal Feedback feature by setting CV62 = 0.

PROBLEM: Decoder does not seem to accept any programming command used on the main line such as done for Advanced Consisting.

SOLUTION: The QSI sound MUST be ON prior to programming any Consist information or any Ops mode or Programming On the Main (POM mode).

WHY?: With sound turned off, the decoder goes asleep and does not pay attention to the first programming command you send it. Instead it will only "wake up" the QSI and hence miss the command, resulting in that loco NOT doing what you have asked it to do (become part of a Consist etc).

What CV is required to control the sound?: CV56.0

CV 56.0 ="0" turns the sound OFF. You need to turn in back on.
