Junior High Provincial Debating Championships

Grades 8 and 9

Time: Wednesday, March 7th, 2012. Registration will be from 4:45 until 5:15. There will be 3 regular rounds (1 impromptu round and 2 prepared rounds of Parliamentary debate). The tournament should end around 9:30 pm. Snacks will be provided at 6:00 PM, but unfortunately we cannot provide a full dinner. There will be muffins and veggies provided for coaches and judges upon arrival. Judges briefing begins at 5:15 PM.

Location: Balmoral Hall School, 630 Westminster Avenue

Resolution: BIRT the government place a tax on sugary soft drinks.

If you have any doubts about your definition, please contact Rhonda Smith at rsmith@balmoralhall.net. Teams will debate both sides. There will also be an impromptu round that will run prior to the prepared round with the topic announced 30 minutes before the debate.

Speaking times will be a maximum of 6 minutes for constructive speeches and 3 minutes for rebuttals. There is no minimum time. Heckling is not allowed. There will NOT be a novice category at this tournament.

The top 3 teams at the Junior Provincials, with no more than 1 team per school, will be selected to represent Manitoba as long as they are in the top half of the tournament. Students selected for the Junior Nationals in Montreal from April 25^th – 30th will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs.

Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate this on the form and we will let you know after March 1st. Schools must bring one judge per team. If you do not have copies of the rules, they are available on the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association website.
