Location: St. Paul’s High School, 2200 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB
Time: Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Registration for both debaters and judges: 4:30 – 5:00 PM; awards at approximately 9 PM.
Parking: Please use the Student Parking Lot off of Bower Blvd (west side of the school). This lot is between Shaftesbury High School and St. Paul’s. Use the entrance adjacent to this lot only, as all other entrances will be locked.
Resolution: This House supports mandatory national service for all eligible Canadians.
*National Service is military or civilian service for eligible Canadians who are eighteen years of age.
Debate Format: The tournament will consist of two rounds of cross-examination debate, where teams will debate for both the affirmative and negative sides in consecutive rounds. Constructive speeches may be no longer than 5 minutes, followed by 3 minutes for cross-examination, and 3 minutes for final rebuttals. Neither heckling nor squirreling are permitted. After each constructive speech, the speaker is cross-examined by the debater not speaking next. There are no POIs allowed during the constructive speeches. There is no novice category; all teams register as open. Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams, although schools may request more (subject to space availability – decisions will be made no later than Monday, March 17). The debate is capped at 44 teams, so early registration is encouraged.
Each school must bring one judge for every team registered in the tournament. Judges may not be high school students for this tournament.
This is a senior tournament, open to students in grades 10-12 only. Please do not register junior teams.
