Junior High Provincial Debating Championships
Grades 8 and 9
Time: Sunday, March 3rd, 2013. Registration will be from 12:15 until 12:45. There will be 3 regular rounds (1 impromptu round and 2 prepared rounds of Parliamentary debate). The tournament should end around 4:00 pm. Snacks will be provided at 2:15 PM.
Location: Balmoral Hall School, 630 Westminster Avenue
Resolution: BIRT single-gender schools are good for education.
If you have any doubts about your definition, please contact Rhonda Smith at rsmith@balmoralhall.net. Teams will debate both sides. There will also be an impromptu round that will run prior to the prepared round with the topic announced 30 minutes before the debate.
Speaking times will be a maximum of 6 minutes for constructive speeches and 3 minutes for rebuttals. There is no minimum time. Heckling is not allowed. There will NOT be a novice category at this tournament.
In the past the top 3 teams from the Junior Provincials, with no more than 1 team per school, were selected to represent Manitoba as long as they were in the top half of the tournament. We presume that will be the case again this year. Students selected for the Junior Nationals in Vancouver from May 10th – 12th will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs. In addition, the top team per school will be eligible to attend the Donahoe Cup tournament in Halifax, April 12th – 14th. Teams that are selected for the Jr. Nationals may not go to the Donahoe Cup as well but the next best team from those schools can attend the Donahoe. Again, students selected for the Donahoe will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs.
Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate this on the form and we will let you know after February 20th. Schools must bring one judge per team. If you are bringing student judges, they must be experienced debaters in grade 11 or 12 as we do not have a novice category. If you do not have copies of the rules, they are available on the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association website.
