UBC Debate Society High School Tournament 2012
We are pleased to extend to you an invitation to this year’s UBC Debate Society High School Tournament. The key details and dates for the tournament are listed below.
Dates: Friday, November 2nd and Saturday, November 3rd Location: UBC Main Campus
Registration Fee: $80 per team
Registration Dates: Opens October 8th and closes October 22nd Team Cap: 8 teams per school
Format -‐‑ Senior
The senior category of the tournament will be conducted in British Parliamentary style using five-‐‑minute speeches. There will be two impromptu rounds on Friday, and three impromptu rounds on Saturday followed by an impromptu semi-‐‑final and final.
Format -‐‑ Junior
The junior category of the tournament will be conducted in Cross-‐‑Examination style, using standard speaking times. Two prepared rounds on topic one will take place on Friday, and two prepared rounds on topic two and one impromptu round on Saturday, the prepared rounds being on the following topics:
Topic one: Be it resolved that the Enbridge Pipeline Expansion should be allowed in British Columbia.
Topic two: Be it resolved that voting should be mandatory.
A prepared final using topic one will conclude the tournament.
Registration
We will be accepting registration by email beginning at noon on October 8th and up until midnight on October 22nd. Registration will be on a first-‐‑come, first-‐‑ served basis, and each school may register eight teams until our total team cap is reached. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all schools’ requests for teams, and therefore suggest that you register as soon as possible after registration opens. Should more spots remain available after registration has closed, we will allocate those spots to waitlisted teams. We request that schools provide a judge for every two teams at minimum.

Please provide us with the names, team pairings, and dietary restrictions of debaters by October 26th at the latest.
Each school upon signing in at the tournament must pay the registration fees of $80 per team either in cash or as a cheque made payable to “UBC Debate Society”. We reserve the right to charge registration fees for withdrawn or absent teams if you do not contact us to withdraw teams prior to October 26th.
Meals
We will provide dinner on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Vegetarian options will be available, and we will do our best to accommodate other dietary restrictions provided that we are made aware of them.
