UBCDS Tournament Invitation
The University of British Columbia Debate Society is pleased to invite you to the 16th annual UBCDS High School Championship on November 4th and November 5th 2011. Please note that this year the tournament will be held one weekend later to allow for students to enjoy their Halloween (or the Mcgill High school debate tournament). The UBCDS is confident that we can run yet another successful tournament and is looking forward to seeing your students engage in some high-quality and competitive debate! The theme for this year’s tournament is… GLEE!
Tournament Format:
As in the past, the tournament will be composed of five competitive rounds as well as a semi-final (for senior) and final round. The categories are as follows:
· Juniors (Grades 8-10)
Juniors will debate in Cross-Examination style in four prepared rounds and one impromptu round with the possibility of breaking to a final (impromptu) round.
· Seniors (Grades 11-12)
Seniors will debate in British Parliamentary style with the possibility of breaking to semi-finals and a final round.
* Any debater who has not previously debated in a prior year will be given novice status. There will be a top novice award in each category.
Registration:
Registration for the tournament will be open at noon on Friday October 7th, 2011 and will close at noon on Friday October 21st , 2011. Registration will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please do not send registration before noon on October 7th. In the interest of allowing as many schools as is possible to attend this tournament, there is a cap of 8 teams per school. If you would like to register more teams in the tournament please make sure you enter them on our waiting list. Please register your teams early to ensure that they get a spot on the tab and on the waiting list!

Please note: sending an email with your registration information to any other email address or individual will not be considered sufficient to register. Upon receiving your registration a member of the UBCDS will respond with a confirmation email as soon as possible.
The cost is $75.00 per team, and $5.00 for spectators. We encourage each school to bring as many judges as possible. Schools in the Lower Mainland (LMW, LME, and LMC) are required to bring one judge per team. For each judge that accompanies your team, $15.00 will be taken off the total registration fee (up to the total school registration cost). Registration will be paid during the check-in time on the first day of the tournament in the form of a cheques or cash. Please make all cheques payable to the “UBC Debate Society”. Receipts are available upon request. Any school in the Lower Mainland not able to bring enough judges please email the tournament immediately.

If you wish to send more teams than allowed by the cap (6), then please put the number of teams over the cap in brackets after the number of teams for immediate registration. We will add your teams to the waitlist Also please put a (n) beside the debater’s name if this is there first year debating. When we receive your email, we’ll send you back and email confirming your registration and indicating the cost you should expect for the tournament. This will be calculated by: (cost) = (teams x $75) – (judges x $15).
