Sr Provincials 20-21
Senior High Provincial Debating Championships
Grades 10, 11 and 12
Time: Sunday, March 7. Registration will be from 11:30 to noon. The tournament will end at 4 PM. The results and awards will be posted at 6 PM.
Location: Online using Zoom, hosted by St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. There will be a tournament website with all of the links to the Zoom call, the draw, etc. All participants must be able to access Zoom, and should have the latest version. It would be a wise precaution to have Zoom installed on 2 devices in case you have any problems with your first device.
Resolution: There will be 3 impromptu rounds. All prep will be done between noon and 1 PM. No outside material or access to the internet, coaching, etc. is allowed once the motions have been released. The rules are on the MSDA site at https://sites.google.com/site/manitobadebate/home.
The six top teams in this competition will represent Manitoba at the National Debate Championships from April 15-18, with no more than 1 team per school until all schools with teams in the top half of the tournament are sending 1 team. There is a good chance that we will be able to send more than 6 teams, but we will not know until March. To be eligible for the Senior Nationals, a school must be a member of the MSDA and must participate in this qualifying tournament. Students selected for the Senior Nationals may have to pay a small fee to cover registration costs.
Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams plus 1 team for every MSDA tournament hosted this year whether before the provincials or after. Since this is a qualifying tournament, there will not be a novice category. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate this on the form and we will let you know by March 2 if space is available. Schools must provide one judge per team. High school students may not be judges. If this causes great problems for you, please let me know and it may be possible to make other arrangements.
