Junior High Novice Provincial Debate Championship

Grades 6, 7, and Novice Grade 8 Students

Dear Debate Coaches:

Balmoral Hall School invites you to the 2022 Junior High Novice Provincial Debate Tournament. This tournament is open to Grade 6, 7 and novice Grade 8 students. Novice 8’s are grade 8 students who were not in tournaments prior to the 2021-22 academic year.

Date: TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2022

Location: Balmoral Hall School, 630 Westminster Avenue

5:15 - 5:30 PM Competitors Registration

5:15 - 5:45 PM Judge Registration

5:45 Judges’ Briefing - All judges must aend the briefing to receive the scoring guidelines used at this tournament.

8:45 - 9:00 PM (Approximately) Awards

This will be an in-person tournament where the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association, along with Balmoral Hall, strongly encourages all competitors, judges, and parents to wear a mask to limit the spread of Covid-19.

There will be two rounds of prepared parliamentary debate. An individually packaged treat and drink will be provided between the two rounds of debate for competitors and judges. Awards will be presented at approximately 8:45 PM.

Resolution: This house would eliminate a final grade for physical education classes.

Speaking times will be a maximum of 6 minutes for constructive speeches and 3 minutes for rebuals. There is no minimum time. Heckling and points of information are not allowed. There will NOT be an open category at this tournament as this is the provincial event for novice debaters. Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams to the Manitoba Junior Novice Provincials at Balmoral Hall, plus 1 extra team for each MSDA tournament they have held or will hold this year. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate this on the registration document. We will respond regarding the potential of sending additional teams by May 12th.

If you are unsure about who will be judging, the link will be re-distributed closer to the date of the tournament. Schools are required to bring one judge per team. If you are bringing student judges, they must be experienced debaters in grade 11 or 12. Experienced Grade 10 debaters are permied to judge with prior approval from the tournament organizers. If you are able to bring additional judges, please let me know so I can ensure there are an adequate number of judges for the tournament.
