British Parliamentary Debate Championship 2022

Dear Participants, Judges, Volunteers, and Coaches,

St. John’s Ravenscourt School is pleased to invite you to attend the Manitoba Junior Provincial British Parliamentary Debating Championships.

This tournament is open to students in Grades 8 & 9, and is the qualifier for the Junior National British Parliamentary Championship in Montreal from November 18to to 20th. Teams must be composed of 2 students from the same school, as hybrid teams are not permitted at the national event.

Location: In Person at St. John’s Ravenscourt School (400 South Drive) Time: 4:30-8:45

Schedule:

Check in: 4:30-5:00

Judges Check in: 4:45-5:00 Motions release: 5:15

Prep for both motions 5:15-6:05 Judges briefing 5:15-6:00 Round 1: 6:10

Round 2: 7:15

Awards: 8:45

Stage 1 - Team Number Requests - Open until Monday September 26th, 2022

Tournament Format:

●  All rounds will take place in British Parliamentary Format with five minute speeches.

●  There will be two rounds with random pairings for both rounds.

●  Students will not be allowed devices during debates or during preparation time.

●  Both rounds will be impromptu topics.

Judging and team numbers:
● Each school must provide one judge for each team that they enter into the event. If this is an issue, please contact me ahead of time.
● Each school can bring up to 3 teams but if coaches wish to enter more, please email me in advance and I will see if there is space.
● Students in grades 11 or 12, and grade 10 students that have been part of a competitive debate program may judge for the schools; however, each school must bring an adult coach and or chaperone for the debaters and student judges.
