The Senior Section (Grades 10-12) will take place at St. Maurice School on Wednesday, February 26th.
Tournament Information
Address: 1639 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg, MB (Please enter the parking lot via Manahan Ave. and use the blue doors to access the high school).
Registration: 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Event End Time: 8:30 p.m.
Snacks will be provided between rounds, but students may want to eat before the event. A judge’s briefing will be provided at 5:00, but there will be no competitor’s briefing.
Students entering the Sr. Douglas Campbell competition must enter one, and only one, of impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking, or poetry/peroration. These events are described in more detail below. Each school is limited to a maximum of 2 students in each event (therefore a maximum of 6 students overall from any one school). Each student will present their speech twice. Of course, in impromptu, the student will pick a new topic for their second speech. In the persuasive and peroration categories, the student would present the same material in both rounds.
In order to have a sufficient number of judges, we would like each school to bring a minimum of one judge for every two students. These can be parents, teachers, or interested community members (no student judges for this Senior competition). If you can bring more, it would be appreciated. If you are unable to bring one judge for every two students or have any other concerns or questions, please contact Chris Allard at 204-396-6299 or email chris.allard@stmaurice.mb.ca.
Email the completed registration form to chris.allard@stmaurice.mb.ca by Friday, February 14th. Thank you!
Senior Douglas Campbell Competition Rules
Each school may enter up to 2 students in each category. No student may enter more than 1 category. Thus, a school may send up to 6 competitors to the event.
Prepared Persuasive Speeches
The topic of this speech is to be chosen by the student, but it should lend itself to a problem-solution approach (e.g., they should identify a problem and discuss one or more possible solutions to it). The aim must be to persuade the audience in an interesting fashion. Notes may be used, but speeches should not be read. Judging will be based on knowledge and research, organization, effectiveness, and delivery. Time limits are 6-10 minutes.
Poetry and Peroration
Students will deliver from memory a prose passage, speech, or poem of at least 200 words or 20 lines. No props are allowed. Judging will be based on literary value or difficulty, effectiveness of interpretation, delivery, and memory. It must be a recital, NOT a dramatic interpretation; no costumes, props or movement, other than gestures and some limited pacing, are allowed. The maximum time allowed is 5 minutes.
Impromptu Speeches
Each speaker will draw three topics, which may be a word, a quotation, a phrase or anything not related to current events. The speaker must choose one of them and then has up to two minutes to prepare. They may write notes but may not bring them up when they speak. The speech must last from 3 to 5 minutes. Speakers may speak in favour of, against, in favour of and against, or about the topic. It should be the sort of speech that would be delivered if the speaker were asked to speak on short notice to a general audience on the topic given. They may interpret it within reason, including treating it as a metaphor but must speak about the topic that they have been given. It is strictly understood that competitors will not use prepared material for this event or repeat speeches. Wit, humour, logic, philosophy, and sentiment are all equally welcome. Judges will be looking for agility of thought, for substance, organizational ability, and style.
