In the beginning
(LIGHT)
(LIGHT)
1 In the beginning God said, "Let there be light",
and there was light at his word.
He made the sun, the moon and all the stars,
and they gave light out when they heard.
Adam and Eve, they knew what he wanted
understood all he said,
but when the devil tricked them with lies,
they listened to him instead.
2 And after that the people walked in darkness,
stumbled through the night,
until God's Son sent down to us from glory
came to bring us light.
And we must turn from our sins and follow the Master
who suffered on the cross -
he wants us feeding the hungry,
helping the needy, then he will shine on us.
3 So won't you wake up, sleeper, from your slumber? -
Christ will shine, he'll shine on you.
It's time to throw aside the deeds of darkness
and the deeds of light to do.
Don't leave your lamp stuck under a bowl,
don't hide it away from view:
put it where other people will see
and then they can praise him too.

This song in particular was a joint venture, as John composed the tune and drafted the words of the first verse, then invited me to complete them. Looking back, perhaps the more obvious route might have been to switch the focus straight to Jesus Christ, described by Paul as 'the second Adam' (see 1 Corinthians 15:20). But a parallel theme in creation history, spiritually speaking, is light, which was darkened by the sin of Adam and Eve and all the wayward people who followed on from them, until Jesus came as promised, the true light of the world. Today we have the chance to turn from the path of night and receive God's forgiveness and the Light of Christ, so letting it shine out through us and lead us to eternal day.
