Now's the time to clap
Psalm 47
(HIAWATHA)
(HIAWATHA)
1 Now's the time to clap with delight, and shout
from the furthest east to the west,
for the Lord our God has delivered us
and will bring us home to his rest.
Christ ascends at last - let the trumpet blast
and resounding joy fill the air.
As we clap and sing to our awesome King
let his praise ring out everywhere!
2 Let us tell the world how the Lord is great
as his wondrous deeds we recall;
people far and near will be drawn to him,
and his throne is high over all!
Christ ascends at last - let the trumpet blast
and resounding joy fill the air.
As we clap and sing to our awesome King
let his praise ring out everywhere!

Lyric Video:
Traditionally Psalm 47 has been regarded as a window on the ascension of Jesus. The occasion may have been a feast even in Old Testament times, and Ascension Day was certainly celebrated by the early church and associated with Psalm 47. Still today the quaint words of the puritan poet Edward Taylor (c.1642-1729) beginning "God is gone up" are regularly sung to the music of William Croft, Gerald Finzi and others. The celebratory Hiawatha wedding music of Frederick Delius whose trustees have generously granted permission for this arrangement, seems ideal for this version of the psalm with its more contemporary language, which starts by encouraging everyone present to applaud the triumphant send-off.
Jesus is returning to his home in Heaven, his redeeming work complete, there to be welcomed by his Father. Soon the new church will be endowed with the living power and companionship of the Holy Spirit.
