Father, you know
(MY REDEEMER)
(MY REDEEMER)
1 Father, you know the way that I am taking,
you’re watching over me from day to day,
you are my refuge when my world is shaking –
all-seeing, Sovereign Lord, you know my way.
2 Jesus, for me you trod the path of sorrow –
here at your cross my burdens now I lay;
trials today for purest gold tomorrow –
all-gracious, holy Lord, you know my way.
3 Surely your Spirit leads me on to heaven,
and I shall see my Saviour’s face one day.
I know that my Redeemer lives for ever -
praise to your name, O Lord, you know my way!

Two memorable talks from a visiting speaker at the church I attended in Essex prompted this hymn lyric. It was formed around six out of many remarkable verses that show how Job, after being highly esteemed as a wise counsellor, a family-man and kind benefactor, is going through acute humiliation and unspeakable suffering in body and mind; yet, in spite of it all, his faith grows stronger in God - his promises, his sovereign wisdom and everlasting love. These verses begin:
“But he knows where I am going. And when he has tested me like gold in a fire, he will pronounce me innocent. For I have stayed in God's paths;…”
(Job chapter 23, verses 10-12, New Living Translation);
and then chapter 19, verses 25-27:
“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he will stand upon the earth at last.… I will see him for myself. I am overwhelmed at the thought!” (NLT)
The hymn was included in a collection to mark the new millennium, ‘Time to Celebrate’, 1999 where MY REDEEMER was recommended as the tune which Gill Berry had composed for it. The text was also published in ‘Come Celebrate’ (Canterbury Press 2009). The words of this hymn, with other resources, are on the Jubilate website, set to O PERFECT LOVE: Father, you know the way that I am taking. The sheet-music for this setting can be accessed at no. 1239 on the Praise! website: Father, you know the way.
