Now as a lamp to guide my footsteps
Psalm 119
(THE LAMP)
(THE LAMP)
1 Now as a lamp to guide my footsteps
your word lights up my path to you.
I vowed to keep your righteous judgements
and this indeed I mean to do.
Lord, when afflictions overwhelm me,
fulfil your word: my life renew.
2 O Lord, accept the praise I offer,
make your directions plain, I pray.
At every step where danger threatens
still help me hold to all you say
and, though the wicked wait to trap me,
let me not wander from your way.
3 Your timeless promise I inherit,
true source of riches unsurpassed!
May I be drawn to your commandments
and act upon them to the last,
your word a lamp to guide my footsteps
as on my path its light is cast.

Lyric Video:
Psalm 119 has been central to me over the years. My initial paraphrase, "Your word's a lamp to guide my footsteps", dates from about 1984 and appears in Praise!:. That version is on this website too, but has been slightly revised to neutralise gender bias.
In a Bible study at Goldings church in 1998 the alphabetical aspect of this psalm was discussed and its benefits as a memory-aid became clear considering the length of the Psalm. I returned to my earlier versions of the 22 stanzas and started the first line of each one with a different letter, and so verses 105-112 now began with N. Other amendments were designed to reflect more of the singers' hopes and desires as they sought to follow the pattern set by the psalmist.
