Come to the fields near Bethlehem
(SHEPHERDS SONG)
(SHEPHERDS SONG)
1 Come to the fields near Bethlehem -
shepherds tell of wonders there revealed to them:
glory shone down with heavenly light
as an angel of the Lord appeared that night.
2 Terror came over them; then the angel said,
"I have good news for you - do not be dismayed.
Christ the Lord is born today; here's the sign you need:
you will find the baby where the cattle feed."
3 Come to the manger where he lies:
touch the very hand that made the earth and skies,
feel his soft fingers in the rough straw
while his mother watches him with love and awe.
4 Let us share everywhere all we saw and heard,
praises sing to our King, Jesus Son of God:
sent to be our sacrifice, dying for our sin,
then to enter heaven and invite us in.
5 Come to the Saviour and rejoice,
As we follow we shall hear the Shepherd's voice:
he will not leave us in our dark night
but will lead us by the hand into his light!

Lyric Video (vocal):
At most Christmas seasons at least one new song or poem or hymn has emerged from the Turl household, and in 1998 it was spurred on by the closing date of a Premier Radio Carol competition. Lyrics and tune came together simultaneously, forming an invitation first to come in thought to meet the shepherds in Bethlehem, and to hear of the wonders they had witnessed as an angel calmed their fears and told them of the Deliverer who was born for them; then to come to the manger to see and even touch the infant Creator of all humanity, and so lastly to come to the Shepherd himself, the Saviour and hear his voice speaking to us through our fears and offering to bring us into his marvellous light of life.
