To you I cling for shelter
Psalm 71
(REMEMBRANCE)
(REMEMBRANCE)
1 To you I cling for shelter:
don't leave me in disgrace,
but come yourself to rescue me,
my rock, my hiding-place.
I praise you, Lord my helper,
my hope securely set
from childhood to advancing years
on you, my refuge yet.
2 And so, when I am aging
do not withdraw your care,
for taunts that you've forsaken me
would drive me to despair.
But hasten, Lord, to comfort,
and let me feel you near,
in times of trial my safe retreat
from hurt, and shame, and fear.
3 Lord, help me stay expectant,
let others hear my praise
as I relate your grace to me,
the wonder of your ways;
assured that every promise
you will at length fulfil -
through all the highs and lows of life
my certain refuge still.
4 Your truth and love reach heaven -
who else is there like you?
And who like Christ, who died to save
and give us life anew?
With joy we sing your praises,
forgiven and restored;
from first to last how good you are -
our only refuge, Lord!

This is a psalm for every age, I think, as the author looks backwards and forwards to a life full of experiences bringing now delight and now desperation, but always with an awareness of the care and loving purposes of God. J Hart, The author of the old hymn “How good is the God we adore”, was at one with this Bible passage when he wrote,
“We’ll praise him for all that is past,
And trust him for all that’s to come!”
