Sing a new song
Psalm 96
(LOBE DEN HERREN)
(LOBE DEN HERREN)
1 Sing a new song to the Lord from the whole of creation,
praising his name and declaring each day his salvation;
proof of his power –
wonders unheard-of before -
publish from nation to nation.
2 Great is the Lord and most worthy that we should adore him,
always respecting him, putting no idols before him;
they have no worth:
God made the heavens and earth,
strength and sheer beauty adorn him.
3 Glory and honour are due to the Lord our Defender
so in thanksgiving our lives let us gladly surrender;
come, let us bow,
trembling to worship him now,
awed by his holiest splendour.
4 Go to the nations and tell them the Lord God is reigning -
he has established the planets, their orbits sustaining.
People, rejoice,
wait for the sound of his voice
fairness and justice ordaining.
5 Sing to the Lord! Send the joy through the universe ringing -
green field and forest, re-echo in jubilant singing!
Let everyone
welcome the King to his throne,
his righteous rule is beginning!

An anonymous German folk-melody became known as LOB DEN HERREN, the opening words of the German hymn of which "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" is a translation. The majestic tune stayed in my mind when I was shaping this hymn., with its broad sweep of praise to God. The Hebrew song accompanied the Ark of God's covenant as it was brought into Jerusalem amid the worship and cheering of priests and people. This is the King we welcome today to reign in our hearts, and we look forward to the day when in his mercy he comes to restore justice and renew the Earth we have so abused.
