Receive the grace
(TITUS)
(TITUS)
1 Receive the grace that brought you your salvation:
though we were undeserving, Jesus died.
God in his love spared us from condemnation,
instead of us his Son was crucified.
2 Go, run the race, your course on earth completing;
keep your imperishable crown in view.
Say no to lies, to compromise and cheating,
say yes to Christ who gave himself for you.
3 Come, see his face when, radiant in glory,
our long-expected Saviour Christ appears.
Then we'll be like him, purified and holy,
no more to sin or suffer pain and tears.
4 So sing his praise, remembering all he gave us,
and shine like stars where sin and darkness reign.
May others hear the word of life that saved us
and praise him with us when he comes again!

A visiting preacher at Goldings Hill Church in 1992 chose to speak about three verses from Paul's letter to 'Titus (from verses 11-13). It was
a passage I might not otherwise have stopped to consider in depth or have stored away in my memory. But it came over arrestingly in three sections, and I found these naturally falling into the musical cadences of Michael Baughen's LORD OF THE YEARS, so aptly composed for Timothy Dudley Smith's hymn which we sang on the same day. The preacher's three headings had been "Receiveing his grace", "Running the race" and "Beholding his face", to which I added "So sing his praise", quite probably recalling the speaker's concluding remarks. John's tune TITUS, composed for this hymn, I think reflects Paul's systematic style as he builds his case and draws out the distinctive issues.
