May God be gracious
Psalm 67
(HARVEST)
(HARVEST)
1 May God be gracious,
may he richly bless us,
shining on us with his loving face;
till his salvation
reaches every nation
and all the people know his ways!
2 Our God, we pray you,
may the nations praise you,
let all the people rejoice and sing.
You will direct us,
guide us and protect us,
always a fair and righteous King.
3 Yes, God, we pray you,
may the nations praise you—
then shall the land yield its harvest store.
Pour out your blessing,
your renown increasing
till all the world is filled with awe!

Here is a psalm which brings me back to the Church of England service of evening prayer where the Deus Misereatur was regularly sung in my early life - a psalm in which we pray that all the nations of the world may praise God and be blessed with a plentiful harvest. As I understand it, this blessing is not always physical because just practices need first to be restored according to God’s promises spoken by his prophets. First and foremost the blessing is in our lives, as the Good News of Jesus Christ spreads, his kingdom expands and more people - from all nations - come to know of his love, to seek his forgiveness and follow him.
Gill Berry composed her tune HARVEST for these words which had originally been set to SCHONSTE HERR JESUS. Sheet music and other resources are at Praise No. 1087.
