All who are thirsty today
(STEEL ZEAL)
(STEEL ZEAL)
1 All who are thirsty today,
come to the waters and drink:
come for the best of wine and of milk –
we don't have to pay a penny!
Everyone, hurry and come,
this is the water of life:
wells of salvation, rivers of joy,
reviving the hearts of many.
2 Let us be seeking the Lord,
call on him while he is near.
Let us abandon all that is wrong
and turn to our God for pardon.
Just like the rain on the earth
so is the Word of the Lord,
always achieving what he intends,
and never returning empty.
3 Jesus himself declared,
"Water of life I give –
ask me for a drink
and you will receive."
So let us come to him,
and from our hearts will flow
streams of abundant life
given to all who believe.
4 Since we are thirsty today
let us drink freely and live:
God in his Word will show us the way –
we won't have to pay a penny.
Everyone, hurry and come,
this is the water of life –
now may the Spirit flow through our lives,
revealing his love to many!
Now may the Spirit flow through our lives,
revealing his love to many!

The cadences of this music reminded me of the passage in Isaiah chapter 55 verse 1 where God can be heard inviting the thirsty to drink from his living water. Jesus re-echoed this offer when he conversed with the Samaritan woman at the welll in John's Gospel chapter 4, and spoke of the water of life which would satisfy for ever her deepest need. Later - in John 7:37-39 - he attended the hebrew Feast of Tabernacles where, as part of the ritual, people lived in booth-like tents for the week and every day watched water being brought up to the temple from the pool of Siloam and then ceremoniously poured out to symbolise God's provision for their ancestors in the desert and their prayers for his continued harvest blessing. At the end of the feast Jesus repeated the invitation he had made earlier, clearly showing that Old Testament passages such as the one in Isaiah 55 had been prophecies about him and the gift of the Spirit, like water that unceasingly flows through us, for ever refreshing and renewing our lives in him.
John's tune STEEL ZEAL, which had given me the idea of writing this song when I first heard it, was so named because of its Caribbean resonances.
