The Saviour comes
THE SAVIOUR COMES
THE SAVIOUR COMES
1 The Saviour comes from Heaven down to Earth:
God’s gift of love displayed in servant-birth.
A cattle trough is all this world affords
as cradle for the infant Lord of lords.
When no one else could pay the price,
God sent his Son as sacrifice;
so at the manger now
with grateful hearts we bow
and worship him who came to Bethlehem!
2 Immanuel, eternal Prince of Peace —
from Satan’s power he purchased our release,
for as he breathed his last upon the cross
God’s pardon flowed to cover sin and loss.
When no one else ...
3 We see his Light, more glorious than the dawn,
and hear good news proclaimed since Christ was born;
we follow him—the life, the truth, the way,
whose Spirit guides us home to Heaven’s day.
When no one else ...

Lyric Video:
This Christmas song was first set to the tune of an Easter lyric by Graham Kendrick, and one of its words, “price”, may well have reminded me of this priceless gift of Christ, who uniquely reconciled humanity to God, being given as a servant and living in poverty without any privileges from the very start. My words also drew on the poet George Herbert who in his intricate metaphysical piece entitled “The Bag” envisaged Jesus giving away his royal robes and regalia as he humbled himself, leaving the Heavens and entering Earth. Jesus was King of kings and Lord of lords, yet swaddling clothes were all the Earth afforded for his clothing (as my original lines put it - albeit more clumsily). The borrowed tune had helped me to form the words, and I was hard put to it to find another until Gill Berry composed THE SAVIOUR COMES, which I thought very fitting for the amazing act of love and grace I had been attempting to describe.
