Millions of migrants
Psalm 114
(EXODUS)
(EXODUS)
1 Millions of migrants, on the run
from Pharaoh’s searing rod,
were heading for their future home –
the promised land of God,
whose ever-patient love and power
sustained them as they trod.
2 Waves of the sea recoiled and let
the refugees go by,
the river Jordan where they crossed
drew back to keep them dry,
while hills like startled animals
were seen to shake and shy.
3 Why does all nature quail before
events till now unknown?
Our God is sovereign in his world –
come bow to him alone
as pools appear in solid rock
and fountains flow from stone!

Psalm 114 is the second of the six Hallel Psalms which together had a prominant part in Jewish festivals where they were sung one after the other. This Hebrew song is likely to have been part of the hymn Jesus and his disciples sang at the end of their Passover meal. It is very short and attention-grabbing as it dramatically describes the hurried flight of God's people led by Moses out of Egypt, all made possible by the Lord's miraculous guidance, protection and provision.
