At this time of celebration
(WALTHAM ABBEY)
(WALTHAM ABBEY)
1 At this time of celebration*
Father, meet with us we pray;
As we join in adoration
may we hear you speak today.
Yours is love that knows no limit,
never failing, ever free,
with the Son and Holy Spirit
one throughout eternity.
2 Fill our minds afresh with wonder
Jesus, at your humble birth,
how you left the courts of splendour,
died to bring our faith to birth.
May your grace, in joys and sorrows,
keep us close to you by prayer
as we face unknown tomorrows
with the promise of your care.
3 Saviour, still through loss and hardship,
disappointment, failure, grief,
help us offer warmth and friendship,
finding ways to bring relief.
Strengthen us when we are feeble,
show us what is best to do;
make us salt and light for people,
by our lives commending you.
4 If a coolness has infected
hearts that could have loved you more,
Lord, it’s you we have neglected,
left you knocking at the door.
Let your Spirit's peace unite us,
may we recognise your voice,
glad to follow where you guide us
in the pathway of your choice.

Sources: Matthew 5:13-16; Philippians 2:6-8; Ephesians 4:32; 2 Corinthians 13:13; Hebrews 4:16; Revelation 3:20
Themes: church united; guidance; neglect; occasion for worship; prayer; salt and light; serving; Trinity
Written in 1998 to celebrate the opening of the twenty-first century, this lyric bears traces of a sermon on Revelation 3:20, "Look, I stand at the door and knock". Later I revised the words, re-purposing them for occasions such as a church anniversary. The focus is praise, thanksgiving and worship, and also rededication in service.
