From a life of weariness
(HARLESCOTT GRANGE)
(HARLESCOTT GRANGE)
1 From a life of weariness,
from my guilt and my distress,
Saviour, to your side I flee -
bring me back to Calvary.
2 I am sinful, prone to fall,
unresponsive to your call;
yet I long your own to be -
bring me back to Calvary.
3 When the wonders of your love
fail my bitter heart to move,
draw me, Lord, your wounds to see -
bring me back to Calvary.
4 Though distractions crowd my day,
though I’m weak and slow to pray,
let your Spirit strengthen me -
bring me back to Calvary.
5 Bring me back to where your blood
washed me clean, O Son of God,
where its power has set me free,
at the cross of Calvary.
6 Bring me back to follow you,
serve the way you want me to,
tell your praise eternally,
Jesus, Lamb of Calvary!

Themes: coldness and calling to God, confession and restoration, recommitment and praise
This lyric began as a poem to seek to express a sense of coldness towards Jesus and his love. I was encouraged, through a missionary's talk, to return to that first sight of his selfless love poured out at Calvary (Golgotha) and the sight of the scars still visible after he rose in victory. His sacrifice accomplished our forgiveness, and returning to the cross can set us again and again on the path of restoration.
HARLESCOTT GRANGE is one of the very first tunes Gill Berry wrote for me soon after we first met in 1990.
The hymn is in the Praise hymn-book at no. 825, and at From a life of weariness (Praise!) where sheet-music and other resources are available to view and download.
