Sing Hallelujah! Sovereign God
Psalm 147
(ELLACOMBE)
(ELLACOMBE)
1 Sing Hallelujah! Sovereign God,
how worthy is your praise!
You build your kingdom, searching out
the homeless and the strays.
How good it is to worship you:
your help is always near
to heal us when our hearts are torn
by sorrow, guilt or fear.
2 We stand in awe of you, whose power
created time and space:
you named and numbered every star,
you set each one in place.
Mysteriously your skill designed
the laws that govern all;
and yet, with utmost care, you lift
the humble when they fall.
3 Let music raise our songs to Heaven
in thankful, glad refrain:
you feed the birds and animals,
refreshing Earth with rain.
What value could our human strength
accomplish in your sight?
Lord, give us grace to seek you first
and live for your delight.
4 How wonderful! Our rock of peace:
you keep the church secure;
and blessings day by day received
will prove your promise sure.
At your command the snow lies thick;
you speak, it melts away.
so may we hear your living words
and praise you, Lord, today!

This paraphrase is in response to Psalm 147 - the second of the five concluding 'psalms of praise' - those above all considered to proclaim the Messianic hope. I am told that in Hebrew these all start and end with the word "Hallelujah", denoting "Praise the Lord!". Psalm 147 contains plentiful examples of blessings from God in which all believers in Christ can now share. The commentator Derek Kidner entitles it 'Lift up your eyes on high', and here we find God's power and wisdom displayed in every area of life and nature. We look forward to our wonder and praise deepening as the future unfolds.
