9/21/15

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 7! We’ve finished all vowels, so we’re on to an exciting week as we start blending consonant and vowel sounds to read syllabically. I will introduce to the students our first thematic 6-week unit on Witches, Ogres, and Monsters, which will bring us promptly to Halloween.

We will officially start our small groups this week. Axelle (Liam’s mother), Emma (Noah’s mother), Jean (Audrey’s father), and Caroline (a mother and a teacher) are helping us in our small groups.

Please check out Franklin’s First Adult Spelling Bee, Sip and Spell: A Night of Language and Lunacy. I’m wearing bee wings and antenna to help promote the evening, friends and family are all welcome; it will be a great evening filled with laughter while fundraising for the school! I will be a spelling contestant.

Tuesday morning we will be going the International Book Fair. If you would like your child to purchase something, the French books are priced around $7-$18, English books are around $5-$15. Please put money in a Ziploc bag, labeled with your student’s name. Let them know where you put it, so they know where to look for it.

In English, we will be talking about anger this week, reading a few books on how to cope when we are feeling disappointed, upset, and angry. It would be wonderful if you supported and talked to your students about it also.

Here’s a breakdown of our week:

French:

We will be working on the letter L. It has the same pronunciation as English and makes the same sound.

We will see:

  • un lion – lion - pronounced: un lee-ohn

  • un lézard – lizard – pronounced: un lay-zaar

  • la lune – moon – pronounced: la loo-n (like Looney Tunes)

  • le lait – milk – pronounced: luh lay

  • un lapin – rabbit – pronounced: un la-pahn

  • un loto – bingo – pronounced: un lo-to

  • un lit – bed – pronounced: un lee

We will complete letter writing, sound isolating, syllable clapping, and syllable identifying activities. Now that all of the vowels are completed, we start our pre-reading exercises – decoding syllables. We will also start differentiating masculine and feminine words for adjective use.

We will continue to work on the two sentence frames we know, in reading and writing and learning a new one:

  • C’est… (most of the students can read and write this independently!)

  • Je suis… (some of our students can read and write this independently!)

  • Je vois… “I see…” (pronounced “juh vwa”) will be introduced this week.

Our sight words so far are: c’est, je, suis, and we’re adding le and la this week.

Book: Une vie de sorcière. We’ll be talking, drawing, and writing about main characters and setting this week.

Math:

We’re on to 6, with review in writing, adding, and recognizing math properties using 0-5.

Art:

We’re learning about purple this week. Purple is tricky because its name and pronunciation changes depending on the gender of the noun. (Masculine form is written “violet” and pronounced “vee-o-lay”. Feminine form is written “violette” and pronounced “vee-o-let”).

Comptine:

· Lundi matin, le roi, sa femme, et le petit prince

Homework explanation:

    • Read for 20 minutes with your student nightly - our weekly letter e-book or check out TumbleBooks in French! It goes through the LA County Libraries.

    • Optional homework:

      • Practice writing "l" on the laminated sheet on the first line (10x), then on the second line, write: la, le, li, lo, lu. Students can practice writing in both print or in cursive.

      • Check classroom.google.com for the ebook, video, and typing sheet. Use your student's google login to access it.

      • Typing Club practice, wherever your student left off during the week.

Reminders:

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • There is no library time this week; we’re going to the book fair instead. You can keep the book for another week or bring it back – it’s up to you!

  • Remind your students to use the restroom before lining up, during recess, and lunch time.

  • Please make sure your child has a bottle of water. A hat is optional.

  • Thank you for the beautiful All About Me pages, the students are so excited to share about themselves!
