12/14/15

Dear Parents,

Happy holidays and welcome to Week 18! We have an exciting, event-filled week!

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at our Winter Show on Thursday at 11:15! Please be sure to have your student wearing RED on Thursday. Because the show takes place during part of our lunchtime, make sure your students get a little extra snack. We have a beautiful potluck buffet to follow our show - here is the sign up if you would like to contribute something. Our special guest, Antonia Riguad, attachée culturelle of the French Consulate will be joining the performance!

I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful Winter Break. Here are some ways to boost your child’s language development at home:

  • Let them help you write a shopping list – sound out the words to spell them together – they’re PROFICIENT in breaking words down into syllables! Ask them if they know what the name of the item is in French.

  • Read a story and ask them to make a prediction. Talk about the main characters and their attributes. Go back and check the prediction.

  • Talk about environmental shapes using, circular, spherical, rectangular, etc. and the position of things in relation to others – top, bottom, beside, to the left of, to the right of, in the middle of, etc.

  • When they’re drawing, have them dictate to you what they’re drawing. Simplify the sentence and write it down together. Then read the sentence together.

Reminders for this week:

  • Monday: Lockdown Drill

  • Tuesday: Primary Theatre Performance, Franklin gets recognized at the Board Meeting

  • Thursday: Winter Performance at 11:15am

  • Friday: Awards assembly, Kindergarten Pajama Day, Holiday crafts in the afternoon

Here’s a breakdown of our week:

French:

  • We will be working on a list of Christmas and winter vocabulary words. We will also be learning to write the letter N.

  • We’re getting better at differentiating between masculine and feminine words and have become more able to describe things using the correct form: “il est…” and “elle est…” “un” or “le” = masculine, “une” or “la” = feminine.,

  • Sight words: c’est, je, suis, le, la, il, elle, mon, and ma.

  • Book: We continue with reading about pine trees!

Math:

  • We’re working on 15 this week, in writing, decomposing, composing, and representing it.

  • We’re also working on counting to 50 independently, by ones and by 10s.

  • We will be reviewing all of the numbers, shapes, and patterns.

Art:

  • We will be working on various holiday themed arts and crafts – early “merci” to the parents who are volunteering on Friday afternoon!

Homework explanation:

  • Read for 20 minutes daily.

Reminders:

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • Library time is Tuesday at 8:30am. Please bring the book back in the 2-gallon ziplock bag. Your child will not be checking out a book this week. They can check one out after the break.

  • If there is a sibling or someone you know who is interested in Kindergarten next school year, the Magnet application is due in January!
