Week 26

2/22/16

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 26! We are still in full assessment mode (both French and English) and will hopefully finish by the end of the week. Your students have been blowing me away with what they know during our individual conferences. Please continue to review letters, syllabic reading, parts of a book, sequencing, and writing with your students at home.

There has been a lot of illness in our class and at school lately. Be sure that your students are dressed appropriately, drinking plenty of fluids, eating well, and getting necessary resting time.

I will be at a site French FLAG meeting on Wednesday with all the other French teachers. Mme Bollier will be our substitute. I realize that I have been out of the classroom a lot this month; I will not be gone at all (as far as I know) in March.

The official move date will be next Saturday, March 5. If you are available this Friday, Feb 27 and next Friday March 4, I would greatly appreciate your help in boxing things up in the closets and around the classroom. I’m usually at school on Fridays pretty late, if you’re free! Unfortunately, we’ll be in boxes for a little while. Our new space looks absolutely gorgeous though!

MOVIE NIGHT is this Friday – the 6th grade parents have asked if the kinder classes can come sing a few songs before the start of the movie, around 6:00pm. Please let me know by Tuesday if you’re interested or were already planning on going to movie night on Friday. If there is a group of 10 kids, I will let them know YES. (Hey! Why not let the kids watch the movie in the auditorium… and come help me pack just a few feet away? :) )

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

French:

We will be learning the sound OI. It is pronounced like “wa”. We’ll see the following words and phrases:

  • un oiseau – bird – un wa-zo

  • les petits pois – peas – les puh-tee-pwa

  • je bois – I drink – juh bwa

  • j’ai soif – I’m thirsty – jay swaff

  • j’ai froid – I’m cold – jay frwa

  • une noix – walnut – une nwa

  • je vois – I see – je vwa

  • une boisson – beverage – une bwa-sson

Sight words: So far, we have learned: C’est, je, suis, le, la, il, elle, ma, mon, comme, ici, vais, joue, pour, fais, un, une, dans, moi, and toi.

Book: Une graine de carotte – a little boy plants a carrot seed, will it grow? We will be working on sequencing.

Math:

We’re almost done testing in math. We’ll be reviewing/testing on prepositions and descriptive words this week.

Homework explanation:

  • Please continue to review with your students. Have them write sentences with you or sound out words and write them together when you want to create a list. Let them describe things to you in French, using color, size, and texture.

  • Read for 20 minutes every day and have a discussion on the reading. Ask your child to retell the story: what happened in the beginning, middle, and end? What would they change if they can change the story?

Reminders:

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • Library time is Tuesday at 8:30am. Please bring the book back in the 2-gallon ziplock bag.

  • Friday is the monthly awards assembly and the winners will have extra PE time with students.

  • A Great Night: Silent Auction is on Saturday, March 12. It’s going to be a wonderful event. I hope all of you can attend.
