1/25/16

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 22! This is a super-exciting action-packed week, with 100th day celebrations. We will be starting assessments in two weeks. We’re doing a lot of reviewing and reinforcements in class. Please make sure that you are also supporting your child at home by reading, working on syllables, number recognition (out of order), and sight words.

I will continue to talk and remind the students of our school/class rules and following through with the acts of kindness that we had last week.

I am attending another district meeting on Tuesday. Mme Bollier will be our substitute. Mme Hope will also be here on Tuesday for music with the students.

Thank you to all the parents who have signed up to bring in something for the 100th day celebration. We are still missing Teddy Grahams, Red Vines cut into 1” strips, and Fruit Loops. Please sign up if you would like to contribute something. Parents who have signed up as volunteers, I will send out a separate e-mail with more detailed information with how you can assist. By the way, on Wednesday, I will tell the students that I won’t be in class on Thursday – I will remind them to be kind to my grandmother, Mme Sun, who will be guest teaching the class.

Lots of things are happening this week. Here’s the breakdown:

French:

We will be learning the letter V this week. V in French is pronounced like “vay” and makes the same sound. Here are the words we will be seeing:

  • Une voiture – car– une vwa-ture

  • Le vent – wind – le von

  • Un violon – violin – un vee-o-lon

  • Les violettes – violets (the flower) – lay vee-o-lette

  • Un vélo – bike – un vay-lo

  • La viande – meat – la vee-ond

  • Une valise – suicase – une va-leez

We work on reading syllables, va, ve, vi, vo, vu, vou. We continue writing our common sentence starters: “je suis”, “c’est”, “je vois”, “j’aime”, “il est”, “elle est”, “je joue” and we’re adding “je vais”.

Sight words: So far, we have learned: C’est, je, suis, le, la, il, elle, ma, mon, comme, ici, vais, and joue, and dans. This week, we add: “pour” (for) and “fais” (make/do)

Book: We will be reading a second version of the Little Red Riding Hood. This time, LRRH takes charge and asks the wolf a lot of questions.

Math:

We continue with subtraction, mixing it in with adding. Categorizing, counting to 100 by 1s and 10s, writing #s 0-20 in order, creating groups of 10, and counting with base-10 blocks.

Computer Science:

We continue with MinecraftEDU project with building houses. Some students have started and have done a great job. I will try to take screen shots to share when they are ready.

Homework explanation:

  • 100 items in quart bag. I've received a few, please bring them in whenever it is ready.

  • Read for 20 minutes daily

  • Review syllables with your students: combine consonant and vowel sounds together – we’ve seen B, C, D, F, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V and A, E, I, O, U, OU (e.g. ba, fe, lo, ta, sou)

  • Count with your students at home, talk about addition and subtraction

  • Optional: TypingClub and code.org lessons
