Week 28

Post date: Mar 05, 2016 8:20:22 AM

3/7/16

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 28 and Trimester 3! Hold on to your hats and fasten your seatbelts because these last 11.5 weeks are going to go by lightning fast. We officially start our plant life cycle theme and will be learning the needs of a plant while growing our own from seeds and completing an experiment. We’ll be reading books about plants while learning all sorts of rich vocabulary.

Now that we’re completely done with assessments, I have to say how proud I am of our entire class. I’m not sure if it’s because we are the perfect classroom of a 50-50 French native and English speakers in a 90/10 program, but your students performed quite well across the board. Report cards will be going home in Thursday Folders, please sign and return the empty envelope on Monday. The report card is yours to keep! This trimester’s conferences are on a teacher/parent request basis. If you would like to meet even though I did not request it, please let me know and I’ll be glad to work out a time with you.

Move update: This Friday will be our last day in the bungalow. I would greatly appreciate your help on Friday in boxing up all the last minute items. If you are free to help me redecorate the new class the following week, I would love to have some help.

Owl Bucks Rewards: Some of the students bring home their owl bucks. If they would like to participate in the upcoming Jump Rope Party on Tuesday, March 8, make sure that they bring in 30 Owl Bucks, so they can participate. No owl bucks, no participation, no exceptions. We also have a second event coming up the following week – movie and popcorn – which will cost 75 owl bucks. These events are during the school day.

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

French:

We are working on the letter “H”. It is pronounced “aaaah-sh” and is completely silent. We will be seeing the following words:

  • un hibou - owl

  • une heure – 1 hour (1 o’clock)

  • une horloge – clock

  • des haricots - beans

  • un hérisson - hedgehog

  • une histoire – story/history

  • un hélicoptère - helicopter

Sight words: So far, we have learned: C’est, je, suis, le, la, il, elle, ma, mon, comme, ici, vais, joue, pour, fais, un, une, dans, moi, and toi. We will be adding “et” (and) and “au” this week.

Book: We will be reading books on plants, some informative texts, and some stories.

Math:

We'll be focusing on:

  • Base-ten and units representation

  • Counting by 5s

  • Continuing with descriptive words (big, small, thick, thin, tall, short, hard, soft, long, wide, )

  • Revisiting our skills with subtraction

Comptine:

Here is last week's Je suis une plante. Feel free to have your students recite this to you - there are actions that go with it!

Je suis une plante

Je suis une plante, je suis vivante!

Je suis une plante et j’aime l’air.

Ma tige me fait tenir debout,

Science:

We’ll be learning parts of a plant and ways to describe a plant. We learned the word “photosynthesis” last week.

Homework explanation:

  • Please read at least 20 minutes per day with your student.

  • Observe the plants around the house and talk about them.

Reminders:

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • Library time is Tuesday at 8:30am. Please bring the book back in the 2-gallon ziplock bag.

  • Return signed report card envelopes on Monday! You can keep the report card for your records.

  • Come help me pack on Friday! I will be in my classroom from 1:30 and on. Hopefully I’ll be done by 5.
