2/1/16

Dear Parents,

Welcome to February and Week 23! I hope everyone had a restful weekend. Hold on to your hats because the rest of the school year is going to fly by, with only 78 days of instruction. We will be starting assessments at the end of this week. Please make sure that you are also supporting your child at home by reading with your child, working on syllables, number recognition (out of order), and sight words.

We will be celebrating Chandeleur with all the other French classes on Tuesday after English. If you’re feeling like making some crêpes, please let me know ASAP! We will need 26 crepes, either with just sugar or with jam.

We’ll be talking very briefly about Chinese New Year on Friday and I will teach your students a simple Chinese New Year song. If your students have Chinese wear, they’re definitely more than welcome to dress up.

We’ll be having a Valentine’s Day craft on Friday, Feb 12. If you’d like to help out in the afternoon 12:20 – 1:20, please sign up here. If your child would like to bring in valentines or treats (pencils, mini notepads, erasers, etc) to share with the class, that is definitely allowed. Please do not write individual student names on the items as it takes a long time to distribute; they can definitely write their own names (cursive practice?) on what they’re distributing.

The Science Fair starts this week. Our class will be visiting on Monday afternoon. I encourage everyone to come on Thursday evening to support BFEF’s event as well as all the efforts in our budding scientists. We have several students participating this year. Participating students' parents, I will retrieve your students’ boards so that they can present on it in class the week of Feb 9-12.

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

French:

We will be learning the letter Y this week. Y in French is called “Greek I” or ee-grec. It makes 2 sounds: “eee” or “yuh”. Here are the words we will be seeing:

  • Un yaourt – yogurt – un yow-urt

  • Un yo-yo – yoyo – un yo-yo

  • Des yeux – eyes – day yuh

  • Un yak – yak – un yack

  • Un pyjama – pajama – un pee-ja-ma

  • Un stylo – pen – un stee-lo

  • Un xylophone – xylophone – zee-lo-phone

We work on reading syllables, ya, ye, yi, yo, yu, you, yon. We continue writing our common sentence starters: “je suis”, “c’est”, “je vois”, “j’aime”, “il est”, “elle est”, “je vais” and “je joue”. I’m going to start encouraging students to write “paragraphs”, forming at least 3 sentences with the same subject, describing the object, if possible.

Sight words: So far, we have learned: C’est, je, suis, le, la, il, elle, ma, mon, comme, ici, vais, and joue, pour, fais, and dans. This week, we will be reviewing all of the sight words.

Book: We read another version of Le Petit Chaperon Rouge. This time, the girl and grandmother are saved by the hunter.

Math:

  • We continue to add and subtract single digits. Count by 1s and 10s, categorize, compare 2D and 3D shapes.

Homework explanation:

  • Read for 20 minutes daily

  • Check Google classroom for the typing sheet

  • Review letter names/sounds, syllables, sight words, sentence starters, numbers (out of order), mix of addition and subtraction. Check out these e-books (everything listed as .epub) to review vocabulary and sentence structures, if you'd like.

Reminders:

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • Library time is Tuesday at 8:30am. Please bring the book back in the 2-gallon ziplock bag.

  • There is no school on Monday, Feb 8.
