11/16/15

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 15! We have an exciting week ahead learning about Thanksgiving. I will not be in the classroom on Monday and Tuesday as I am presenting at a conference. Mme Bollier will be our substitute. I had forgotten to tell the students that I will not be there, so I would greatly appreciate it if you let them know. I will be back on Wednesday, when we also have our monthly awards assembly.

We will be making butter on Thursday and enjoying it with homemade cornbread. Special thanks to Liza Sacilioc (Izzy's mom), Rena Sassi (Imani's mom), Jennifer Torres (Jasmine's mom), and Rochelle LaPlante (Toby's mom) for helping us shake things up! If your child has food sensitivities to heavy whipping cream, butter, flour, baking soda, milk, corn meal, please let me know ASAP!

Here’s a breakdown of our week:

French:

  • We will be learning the sound OU this week and next week. It is pronounced “ooo” as in “boo”. Here are the words we will be seeing:

    • une poule – hen – pronounced: une pooluh

    • un loup – wolf – pronounced: un loo

    • un mouton – sheep – pronounced: un moo-tone

    • des bijoux – jewelry – pronounced: day bee-joo

    • une moustache – mustache – une moostash

    • un moustique – mosquito – un moos-teek

    • un hibou – owl – un ee-boo

    • un chou – cabbage – un shoo

    • un couteau – knife – un koo-tow

  • We work on reading syllables, mou, cou, lou, pou, tou, rou. We continue writing our common sentence starters: “je suis”, “c’est”, “je vois”, “j’ai” and “j’aime” with the addition of “Le/la ___ est___”. “Il” and “elle” will also be introduced.

  • We’re trying hard to differentiate between masculine and feminine words in order to use the correct form of description: “il est…” and “elle est…” “un” or “le” = masculine, “une” or “la” = feminine.

  • Book: La soupe aux cailloux, a Chinese version, where three monks revive the trust and togetherness of a village that had gone through a lot of suffering.

    • We start comparing/contrasting, demonstrating opinions/preferences, and we will continue to work on main characters, setting, and predictions. We’ll work on the sentence frame: “J’aime…parce que…”

Math:

  • We will be writing 12 this week. We continue to compose/decompose, work with base ten, categorizing, naming solid shapes and knowing their attributes, and adding.

Art:

  • We will make a hand turkey

Comptine:

  • We will learn a new holiday song (L’as-tu vu?) for our Winter Show. Make sure you have Thurs, Dec. 17 @ 11:15 saved for our show!!

Homework explanation:

  • Check classroom.google.com for all of the necessary materials for optional digital assignments.

Reminders:

  • Mme Bollier will be my substitute on Monday and Tuesday.
