Dear Parents,
Welcome to Week 21! I hope everyone enjoyed a good 3-day weekend! All of the Kindergarten teachers will not be in class TUESDAY due to a grade level math meeting. Mme U will be our substitute. We start Tri 2 assessments in 3 weeks. Please make sure that you are supporting your child’s learning at home by reading with your child. You can work on reading syllables, number recognition (out of order), sight words, counting up to 50 by 1s and 10s.
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., this week is Yellow Ribbon Week. Our class will focus on showing kindness to our friends. We will be cutting out hearts and drawing happy faces to give to our friends who need a little pick me up. We will also be drawing how we can be kind to each other. Here's a list of 25 suggested things that students can do, if they would like to take on the great kindness challenge this week!
Our 100th day celebration will be next Thursday (1/28). If you are interested in helping out the class throughout the day, you are definitely welcome! Please check the sign up list. A special homework assignment will be given. Please check the letter and explanation in Tuesday’s homework folder. Also, we will be making a snack called “GORP” which is a combination of a lot of different snacks. Please check the sign up list for things to donate.
We also start a new theme in our reading: Little Red Riding Hood. We will be discovering different versions of this story and comparing/contrasting them throughout the next four weeks.
Friday is Franklin’s Barnes and Noble night at the Americana. I will be there in the evening reading a story. The order of readers hasn’t been announced, but Mrs. Atikian usually puts the kinder teachers earlier in the night. Hope to see y’all there!
Lots of things are happening this week. Here’s the breakdown:
French:
We will be learning the letter C this week. As in English, C makes 2 different sounds, “kk” or “sss”. We’ll be concentrating on the “kk” sound, although we will talk about the “sss” sound also as the students see a few words with the soft c. Here are the words we will be seeing:
Un camion – truck - ka-mee-own
Une culotte – underwear – ku-lotte
Une corde – rope – corde
Une carte – card or map – car-te
Un carré – square – kah-ray
Un crapaud – toad – cra-po
Un cadeau – gift – ka-do
We work on reading syllables, ca, co, cu, cou, ce, and ci. We continue writing our common sentence starters: “je suis”, “c’est”, “je vois”, “j’aime”, “il est”, “elle est” and we’re adding “je vais”.
Book: We will be reading the Charles Perrault version of Le petit chaperon rouge aka Little Red Riding Hood
Math:
We will work on #17
Your students are doing a fantastic job with the concept of subtraction! We continue to work on subtraction using manipulatives and drawings.
We’ll also continue working with geometric shapes, counting to 50 by 1s and 10s, writing numbers 1-20, and representing numbers.
