10/19/15 (Edited)

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 11! This is going to a super fun-packed week with all the spirit! I’ll be dressing up every day with the themes, too. We start assessments this week; they are mostly individual assessments. I will be presenting at an EdTech conference (FallCUE2015) with Mme Olson and Profe Bennett on Friday, so I will not be here. Mme Bollier will be our substitute.

I don’t remember if I had mentioned my teaching goals this year at Back-to-School Night - to help every student become syllabic readers and writers by the end of the year and to create more art in the classroom.* We’re working on reading/writing/decoding skills every week, if not every day. You can help support this skill at home by letting your students sound words out when you’re reading together at night (even if it's in English), reading the menu at a restaurant, making a shopping list, writing a play date invitation, etc.

There has been a few issues with our French music teacher, so we haven't started our music class like we had planned. Fingers crossed that it'll start soon! Please do save the date: Thursday, Dec. 17 will be the French Department Winter Showcase.

Here’s a breakdown of our week:

French:

We will be working on the letter R. It is pronounced like “air” and makes the throaty “rr” sound.

We will see:

  • un coeur – heart - pronounced: un cur

  • un rat – rat – pronounced: un rah

  • les raisins – grapes – pronounced: lay ray-zun

  • un rideau – curtain – pronounced: un ree-doe

  • un requin – shark – pronounced: un ruh-ke-un

  • une raquette – racket – pronounced: un ra-ket

  • une rue – street – pronounced: une rew

We will complete letter writing, sound isolating, syllable clapping, and syllable identifying activities. We read the syllables ra, re, ri, ro, ru, and ré and identify them in our words.

We will continue to work with “je suis”, “c’est”, “je vois”, “j’ai” and “j’aime”.

Book: L’ogre qui avait peur des enfants – The ogre who is afraid of children. We’ll continue to work on making predictions, identifying the main character(s) and setting of a story, and sequencing. Here's a video of the story:

Math:

We’ll be completing 10 and continue to work on prepositions, adding, and counting.

Art:

We’ll be making a skeleton with pasta this week

Comptine:

Petit rat rat rat – Listen to it via dropbox.

Homework explanation: Digital documents can be found via your student's Google Classroom account:

  • Watch the R writing video, practice writing R and the syllables on the laminated sheet

  • Type the syllables as directed on the typing sheet

  • Read for a minimum of 20 minutes, record it on the yellow sheet, and discuss with your child.

  • Use math in your daily activities: count the number of plates, broccoli on their plate for dinner, etc. Provide situations where things need to be added together. Identify the shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon) in everyday objects.

Reminders:

  • Please do not forget that Square 1 Art orders are due on Monday. You can order directly online or turn in the order form.

  • Please make sure to bring back your student's writing notebook on Monday!

  • Please make sure you sign your child’s behavior log every day.

  • Red Ribbon Week is this week! Here’s what to wear on each day:
