Vinyl Flag

Today you'll be creating your own flag.

Here are 59 "interesting" city flags around the world and Citylab's Best and Worst Official City Flags. Keep in mind, we won't be printing images on the flags -- the design is a result of contrasting shapes and colors!

Here's a sample design:

When you open Silhouette Studio, verify the size of your design by clicking on it once. Use the white square in the corner, or the Scale Menu to resize to just under 5" x 3".

Scale: 5" x 3"

When you bring in a file, it is usually larger than intended. Use Scale to make sure it is just under 5" x 3".

Modify: Release Compound Paths

We're going to Release Compound Paths so that we can give the vinyl cutter different instructions for our design elements.

Line Color for each

Now that we have released compound paths, we can tell the vinyl cutter which elements are going to be cut at the same time. For example, in the image below, we want all of the buildings to be cut from the same piece of material -- so we select all three buildings and make the line color different from the sun/moon line color.

Cut Settings

Now, using the different line colors, we can tell the vinyl cutter to only cut the blue lines, or only cut the red lines, depending on what we are ready to cut.
