3D Printed Phone Stand

Participants will design a custom phone stand for 3D printing.

Measure your phone

Using the digital calipers, measure your phone in millimeters. 3D printing frequently uses millimeters, so it is good to become familiar with the unit.

Length (usually the longer side of the face) = __

Width (usually the shorter side of the face) = __

Height (or "thickness") = __

Advantages of TinkerCad

Create a free TinkerCad account at TinkerCad.com.

Starting TinkerCad

After creating a new account, TinkerCad automatically starts in lesson mode.

Go to New Project or New Design. Many of our shape and tool options are on the right.

Using TinkerCad

Use the white cubes to resize objects.

Use the cone to raise and lower objects along the Z-axis.

Use the curved handles to rotate or flip objects.

Create a "Ghost Phone" with the Square Hole

Use the Box Hole shape to create a representation of your phone. Round up the width 1 mm. The height and length should be close, but these are less important than the width.

Choose One Letter or Shape

Some shapes may be better than others at supporting your phone. Once you begin arranging the ghost phone and the desired shape, you will have a better idea of how they go together.

Increase the height of your letter to approximately 10mm. Increase the length and width as needed -- the length of your letter or shape should be no larger than the width of your phone.

Align the Ghost Phone to the stand

Using the black cone tool on the ghost phone, lift it about 3mm above the workplane. Using the Z-axis handle, angle the phone to approximately 15 degrees.

Group your shapes

Select all of your shapes and click Group. It's important to group your shapes, or it may not print as expected!

Design Properties: Rename & Download STL

Under Design, go to Properties to name your design. You can also make the design public here. You will then select Download for 3D Printing and select STL format.

Prepare in MakerWare & Print

You can open MakerWare and add the STL file to the work area. We will use default settings for low.
