3D Printed Ornament with LED

Today you will 3D print an ornament and add an LED lightbulb and battery. For time's sake, you will use a template shape provided.

A preview of the shapes we'll be using today:

Limits

Out of consideration to your peers and minimizing print time:

Your shape will be 2mm thick. Your shape should be 76.2mm (3 inches) or less on the largest side.

You will need to add holes for the LED leads and for the hanging hole.

Download an SVG

Choose one shape from the image template above. At the bottom of the page are the corresponding files. To the right of the file names is an arrow pointing down. This is the download link. Right-click on the desired file, Save as, and select the Desktop.

You will also need to download the file called "3v_battery_holder_to_be_attached.stl." This STL file was created in TinkerCad and is merely a rounded roof with a smaller rounded roof inside as the hole, and sized large enough to cradle the bottom of the battery.

Scale & Height Options

Import at 100% Scale, and 2mm Height.

Import "3v_battery_holder_to_be_attached.stl" at 100% scale. Find a good place for it on the ornament template. You will use the Cylinder Hole to create holes for the LED leads and for a hanging hole. The LED lead holes should be pretty close together. The LED lead holes should be close to 2mm in diameter, and the hanging hole will be somewhat larger, 4-5mm.

Using TinkerCad

Use the white cubes to resize objects.

Use the cone to raise and lower objects along the Z-axis.

Use the curved handles to rotate or flip objects.

Check Alignment

Select All, go to Adjust > Align. Click on a gray dot to align to Top/Middle/Bottom, or Left/Center/Right.

Once everything is aligned, Select All and Group. Just one more step now!

Name and Download

Click on Design. Select Properties to rename your file. When finished renaming, select Download for 3D printing. Select STL. Save your file. We'll collect files for processing in MakerWare and for printing.

Once printed, you will attach the battery and LED light.
