Allen House
Allen House was a two-story small house student residence-turned-office building located near the southwestern corner of Avenue I and Bowers Boulevard, facing east.
The building was the original home of the Epsilon Pi chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1979, SHSU asked the fraternity to move off-campus because they did not maintain the house [2]. The building became student housing, and the Texas State University System Board of Regents approved its name, honoring the recently-deceased Allen.
The building housed 36 students. It was mixed-gender in the 1990s and available only for non-traditional students aged 24 years and above [3]. In its final semester, it was available for males only [4].
The Department of Residence Life classified this small house as part of various geographic housing groups over the years, most recently The Valley [4].
In 2009, SHSU announced Allen House was on the demolition schedule as part of the 2008 Campus Master Plan [5, 6].
In March 2009, Residence Life announced the building would house academic offices beginning the Fall 2009 semester. The building was home to the Banner Resource and Training Center after renovations. The October 2009 Banner newsletter noted, "the first floor...has been turned into work space for Banner training - including two computer labs, one with eighteen stations and one with twelve, a small conference room, and several smaller work rooms" [7].
SHSU Online maintained offices within the building until October 2014.
In its later years, the College of Health Sciences (COHS) Department of Population Health (formerly Health Services and Promotions) used the second floor. Those offices moved to the fourth floor of the CHSS Building in May 2016.
Allen and the three surrounding houses were approved for demolition during the fall 2014 semester [7] but remained standing until July 2016.
SHSU built the Biology Laboratory Building on the site in 2018.
