Academic Building One

Academic Building One

Academic Building One (abbreviated as AB1 or ABI) is a four-story academic building located in the east-central part of campus.

The building began as the Math and Foreign Languages (MFL) Building. It was one of the first three buildings – also including the Business and Economics Building and the university's third library - constructed east of Avenue I, at the time Sam Houston State College's eastern border.

In the mid-1980s, there was a push to have the names of buildings reflect the courses taught within them. Because math and foreign language classes were taught elsewhere by this point, SHSU renamed this building Academic Building One [1]. Other buildings affected by this change were AB2 and AB3.

Between the mid-1990s and early-2000s, the College of Business Administration website identified AB1 as part of the College of Business Administration complex and used for overflow offices from the adjacent Smith-Hutson Business Administration Building, including Department of Management and Marketing classes and offices and the Lewis Center for Business and Economic Development [2].

Once home to the Political Science and Sociology departments, AB1 now houses the Department of Computer Science and SHSU Computer Services.

The top floor consists of a penthouse with a mechanical room.

In August 2012, the Music Therapy Clinic opened in room 201 [3].
